The 5th African Philanthropy Conference proudly hosted an enlightening Ignite Talk with H.E. Mrs Graça Machel, a stateswoman and liberation movement icon. With a legacy spanning over five decades, Mrs Machel has devoted her life to improving the lives of women, children, and communities across Africa. In a profound conversation with writer and development advisor Theo Sowa, Mrs Machel shared her invaluable insights on community development, philanthropy and the future of social investment.

Mrs Machel’s reflections centred on the Foundation for Community Development (Fundacao para o Desenvolvimento da Comunidade) in Mozambique, an enduring symbol of community resilience and empowerment. Established during a period of intense internal conflict and displacement, the FDC has played a crucial role in strengthening Mozambican communities. Through this foundation, Mrs Machel encouraged the people of Mozambique to reclaim their identity and take charge of rebuilding their communities. She highlighted the importance of sustainability and self-reliance, advocating for a shift away from dependency on external aid towards the development of local resources and capabilities.

A significant portion of the discussion was devoted to the distinctive nature of African philanthropy. Mrs Machel articulated that African giving is deeply rooted in principles of equality and communal sharing. Unlike traditional philanthropy, which often begins with financial resources and subsequently identifies causes to support, African philanthropy starts with identifying community challenges. The response to these challenges involves mobilising resources such as time, skills, and money, reflecting a collective sense of responsibility and unity. In this model, there is no hierarchy between givers and receivers; instead, it promotes a sense of equality within the community.

Mrs Machel emphasised the unique opportunity African philanthropy has to redefine global philanthropy. She urged a focus on improving the lives and dignity of people, stressing the importance of understanding and working with the diverse sub-regions across Africa to embrace a truly pan-African approach.

During the dinner, H.E. received the physical award of her African Philanthropy Lifetime Achievement Award, which was conferred in absentia at the 2022 edition of the conference. This was in recognition of her monumental contributions to the sector. In her acceptance speech, Mrs Machel expressed deep gratitude, acknowledging the collective efforts of countless individuals who have contributed to philanthropy in Africa. She reflected on the profound significance of the award, viewing it as a symbol of the shared journey towards uplifting the continent.
